Shabad is the Guru and your Surat (attention) is a Chela or Follower

Guru Nanak’s guidance is to utter the mantra and focus the mind of the sound that we are uttering. This way mind will come to the present moment. The following audio file goes in detail on the explanation.

The practice of Simran (or Jaap) is present in many other spiritual practices. They all have their own unique techniques to focus the mind (e.g. focus on the 3rd eye; or focus on the breath; or focus on a flame; or focus on a picture; etc). Guru Nanak’s technique, is to focus the mind on the sound of the mantra being uttered.
